Her Failed Band, 1982

Black lace mantilla yes but she calls it her Guyville

Headbanger Act. She's leaning quasi-

raunchy elbows on the end of a plywood crate. Her crazy-shaped

guitar sparkles turquoise, well, look at the date, always a riff

on or homage to the sixties. It's Reagan,

Tylenol poisoning, Falklands, lipo, Ma Bell split.

It's everything, and everything stays there.

L'Allegro: Driving Home

Must I change my triumphant songs? said I to myself,

Must I indeed learn to chant the cold dirges of the baffled,

And sullen hymns of defeat?

—Walt Whitman, “Year That Trembled and Reel'd Beneath Me”
